Cupcakes!

We love to do cupcakes here at SYF!   Custom cupcakes with fun animals or designs, or just delicious flavorful cupcakes!

You can see that I like to keep the colors of the frosting natural, like Vanilla or Chocolate,  and then to spruce it up or get a fun color I like the looks of a fun topper.  These little animals are so cute!  My favorite were the snakes!   See that they are 2 x 2, for a little Noah’s Ark Theme!

Of Course we do “regular” cupcakes as well,  These are one of the most loves Specialty Cupcakes – The Margarita cupcake!

The Whole Museum!

That was the title for my cake for the Let Them Eat Cake event for City of Hope.

VanGogh Cake with frame

The theme was Masterpieces of Cake,  I went outside the lines a little bit with my cake (which I like to do)  I didn’t just stick with paintings, I went to the Philadelphia Art Museum and looked around,  I was reminded that fine art is not always a painting, it is a Vase, a sculpture, even a poem or book.   So that is what inspired me,  art of all kinds.

This was the final product, all set up at the event.  It was a large column, a hand piped vase on top with three stacked books on top of that.  Leaning on the column, almost completely upright was my buttercream rendition of “A Starry Night” by Vincent Van Gogh, one of my favorite paintings of all time.  It was an actual cake, albeit in a box, I wanted to to be able to be really made in cake.  Lastly was a chocolate sculpture based on the Kissing Students Sculpture in Estonia.  I really love that statue, It just gives me a happy feeling (I have never actually seen it in person though).

Museum Cake 2

This is it again, recreated back at my studio, unfortunately without the chocolate sculpture which met an unfortunate end in the journey back from the event.

Hand Piping on the vase, (please excuse the lighting, the Crystal Tea Room is beautiful, but not ideal for cake photography).

Handpiped Vase

I thought there would actually be a lot of “impressionist” cakes.  That particular technique lends itself to cake a little more easily.  However there was only one other Van Gogh cake, and it was of the Sunflowers,  No other impressionist cakes at all…Whew…!  But in reality, I loved how it came out!

VanGogh in Buttercream

A few how to pics!  This is my buttercream palette, I tried to keep it really neat but it still got jumbled!

My Buttercream Palatte

This is the cake,  I built a box for it from foam core, lined it with parchment, covered the outside with fondant, cut the cake to fit in really snugly and smooshed it in there with a bit of buttercream and just for good measure I made pegs of plastic plates and shish kabob sticks just to be sure it would not go anywhere!  Then I drew on a basic template and piped away!

Would you call this a study? Buttercream Vangogh

See!  I told you it was real cake!  And the nurses in the PICU at CHOP were happy to help eat it!

The vangogh cake cake is real

We did not actually win the competition, (don’t get me started)  The cake that did win was wonderful.  If you would like see some of the other cakes, here is a link to an article.  Overall, it was a good expirience, It was nice to interact with some of the other bakers.

Football Helmet Cake: St Joe’s Prep

St Joes Prep football cake

A super fun grooms cake!  A St Joe’s Prep Football Helmet!

It was actually for the Serenade the night before the wedding!  I had never heard of a Serenade before this gig but it is apparently something they do in Wildwood, NJ.  From what I gathered it is where the groom serenades the bride; I believe this particular celebration was going to involve a marching band.

Football helmet cake

The reference picture I was given had a strap covering the bottom of the Logo so I kinda missed the “J” part of the logo, and then when I double checked it I made a little typo on google and still didn’t see it.  Yikes!  Luckily on the triple check I found a better picture and we got the logo fixed before the party!

The moral of the story is….Get lots of reference pictures!

Paisley Wedding Cake

Paisley wedding cake

A lovely cake for a wedding at the Arts Ballroom Philadelphia. It is a lovely venue!

Paisley Wedding cake2

The monogram was designed by the groom for a personal touch!

paisley piping

There were two simple layers and two layers that were entirely hand piped with a paisley pattern.

Peony Wedding Cake

We went for simple and romantic with this coral colored wedding cake.

gumpaste peony

Five hand made sugar peonies and several sugar roses!  We went for really simple with the white fondant, that way the focus remains on the handiwork of the flowers!

Peony Wedding Cake

The Wedding was at the Wildwood Convention Center,  The room was very pretty, looking out over the boardwalk at sunset!

Apple II Computer Cake

One of my favorite cakes to make is something fun and unexpected!  Who would expect a Apple II computer as a groom’s cake?  It actually wasn’t to difficult of a shape to make, it was a pretty boxy design.  However, it required quite a bit of research and it did take a lot, a LOT, of cake.

Mac cake 2  Mac Cake

Complete with external memory drive, which was apparently the ONLY memory at the time.

The keyboard and logo were hand painted!

Never forget about the back of the cake, ( it may not be quite as accurate as the front, but you get the idea!)

Also, The cake was so heavy I was worried that the shelf wouldn’t hold it up so I piled up a bunch of Styrofoam cake dummies to help support it!

All of the photos below are by Susan Hennessy Photography.  I am pretty sure that this pic below is taken at the cake reveal!  Pretty sure the Groom was happy with the cake!

The Phillies/CHOP Halloween Party

Phanatic Cake

Recently I had the distinct privilege to provide a cake and dessert bar for the Annual Phillies and CHOP Halloween Party at the Airport Embassy Suites.  It was so much fun,  I really love how the Phanatic Cake turned out.  The kids thought it was pretty cool,  The parents were probably more impressed than the kids were.  We had such a great time. I was extra special for me since I am still a part time CHOP nurse.  I work in the ICU and we rarely get to see kids when they are all better.  It was nice to see all these kids doing so well and having a great time.

Here is a Video that gives you a little view of the day!

Throwback Post – Paines Park Opening

This post is pretty late!  This event happened a little over a year ago. I made the cake for the opening of the park.  It was a challenge to make a  irregularly shaped object fit in a nice square to feed a bunch of people,  But I think I pulled it off!  It was my largest cake to date,  It fed $250 people

  Paines Park Cake

The cake  assembled at the site,  So no posed studio pics!

The cake was assembled in the car,  It was a super hot day in May but the cake held up fine!

Seve Your Fork Staff for the day!

This is the first time I had to have staff for an event, Luckily they work for free!

Cake's Gone - Save Your Fork

Clearly the cake was a hit! No leftovers!
